Conflict Coaching: Key to Better Relationships–Business or Personal

By: Tess Worrell

What is Conflict Coaching?

Conflict coaching uses a specifically defined process to walk clients through the verbal and nonverbal patterns of communication they use during conflict. Using a specific conflict situation, clients:

  • examine their own triggers,
  • define their reactions, and
  • consider their responses.

They use the same process to examine the conflict scenario from the other’s point of view. As clients work the process, they are guided to examine which behaviors work toward resolution and which need adjustment. Then, they work with the coach to create more beneficial alternatives, both for achieving their desired goals and for building a working relationship with the other person. They then practice the new patterns so they can naturally use these with the other person in working through issues at hand.

Benefits:

For business clients. Studies show businesses lose about $359 billion in paid hours (or the equivalent of 385 million working days) to employee conflict. When highly skilled members of the team can’t get along–clients suffer, workplace unity suffers, profits suffer. Not only do these decline in the short term, but ongoing conflict commonly causes employees to leave either through quitting or firing, creating long-term cost. Businesses lose both their investment in training and the valuable skills that caused the person to be hired in the first place. Further, the employee takes that value to a competitor.

At The Resolution Center we help businesses succeed by working with supervisors or employees whose interaction patterns create havoc in the workplace. As we educate clients on more effective strategies for achieving personal goals while relating to others in the workplace, the business profits as employees pull together to achieve workplace goals.

For family clients. Conflict, whether in a marriage, between siblings planning parent’s long-term care, or as extended family negotiates an estate costs family members emotionally and financially. The Resolution Center offers coaching to help family members find more productive ways of relating so that issues can be resolved and relationships reshaped into a pattern that works for all.

Conflict Coaching Mediation Connection

The Resolution Center offers mediation as a means for parties to resolve legal issues whether in business or family. Yet, some find it difficult to participate in mediation because they can’t communicate their desires and goals in a way that moves the discussion forward. Whether they engage in patterns that shut discussion down or passively accept other’s positions without standing up for their own interests the client loses the ability to make the most of mediation, as do the other parties. Conflict Coaching helps clients redefine communication patterns so they can fully engage the mediation process creating the environment for real long-term solutions to the issues.
